Hardness Tester Machine
What is a Hardness Tester Machine?
As the name suggests, a hardness tester is a device that measures the hardness of a material to determine if it’s suitable for a particular use. The tester measures the effect or depth of a localized penetration/indentation made by a standardized indenter.
The Rockwell hardness tester forces a diamond spheroconical or tungsten ball indenter into the surface of a material under two different force loads. The hardness value is therefore the difference between the depths of the two indentations.
The Vickers method is an optical system that uses a diamond indenter with a pyramid front and square base. The indenter is forced into the test surface at 120kg-f for 10 to 15 minutes and then removed. The depth of the two 136 degree angled sides is then measured to give the Vickers hardness value.
Brinell hardness tester uses a 10mm carbide ball indenter with loads of up to 3000 kg-f and holds it in place for a certain period. The hardness value is calculated by measuring the diameter of at least two indentations, and dividing the load by the spherical area. This tester is mostly used to test very coarse or rough materials, hence the heavy load.
Applications of Hardness Tester Machines
Hardness testers cover different feature equipment, load ranges and degrees of user convenience. There is therefore a most suitable tester for every application. The most common applications for hardness testing machines include;
- Determining the perfect material to use when manufacturing or repairing a machinery.
- Quality testing and assurance in different industries like aerospace, automotive, oil among others.
- Continuous quality testing and flaw detection by integrating the hardness tester into the production process.
- Testing the integrity of welded parts.
Types of Hardness Testing Strength
There are three common types of hardness tests performed by Hardness testers; Brinell hardness test, the Vickers hardness test and the Rockwell hardness test.
The Rockwell hardness test is considered to be the easiest to carry out and gives more precise results hence it’s the most widely used.
The Brinell test is specifically used to test materials that have a very rough exterior or they are too coarse.
Lastly, Vickers hardness test is used to evaluate thin materials or measuring very small surfaces because the indentation is small and the load is light.
