Portable Hardness Tester
- What is the portable hardness tester?
Some distinct features of all portable hardness testers are their small sizes, compactness, and relatively lightweight body. However, they measure the hardness of materials in different scales with precision and accuracy as their traditional counterparts.
Modern technology makes it possible for recently developed portable hardness testers to measure the material’s hardness in all scales accurately.
You can also move them with ease to any site where the material to be sampled is stationed. This ease of mobility is the most significant advantage of a portable tester. Nonetheless, these portable hardness testers’ electronic nature makes some benefits additional to them, including saved settings, storage of hardness test results, communication with a computer for analysis and reporting, and result printing.
- How do portable hardness testers work?
The three different types of portable hardness testers are itemized below with their separate operations and characteristics. You should fully understand their individual properties to use them optimally.
a) Leeb (dynamic, rebound, impact)
This hardness tester developed by a man called Leeb employs the use of rebound technique for accessing the hardness of materials. To achieve this, a sensor is attached to the item, and the tester’s transducer hits the object with its peen, which then bounces off to get the hardness results.
The speed of the peen bounce is measured before and after impact. A value of 1000 is used to multiply the speeds’ ratio, and a Leeb hardness number is obtained from this multiplication.
A challenge of using the Leeb hardness tester is the inability to measure any hardness for objects that weigh 5kg and less and materials with thickness less than 10mm. An alternative procedure in using the Leeb hardness tester to achieve this is by grinding the items using a thick layer of grease to the huge slab, which is only thinkable for regular-shaped objects.
b) UCI (ultrasonic, contact-resonance, contact-impedance)
The UCI hardness testers employ the ultrasonic contact impedance to access the hardness values of materials. The operator presses the device on the sample object after the sensor has been connected to the sample.
A diamond pyramid attached to the sensor’s tip is installed on the sample object’s surface with very little depth. This tester is a similar testing technique for the Vickers method. The only difference is the Vickers method’s applied loads, which are usually in the range of between 1kg to 10kg.
The UCI also differs from the Leeb method. It is not restricted to measuring only heavy and thick materials but can also be employed for lighter materials.
The range of items measured using the UCI hardness tester includes irregularly shaped objects, objects with thin materials, small things, and layered materials. However, the UCI method’s drawback is its inability to measure the hardness of cast iron and non-ferrous metals and massive objects and hard-grained materials.
c) Combined (UCI+Leeb).
The third method for portable hardness testing is a hybrid technique that features the Leeb and UCI hardness testing methods. This means you get the functionality of both the Leeb method and the UCI method, along with their collective advantage.
This combined tester’s increased benefits increase the price as it cost substantially more than either the UCI or the Leeb portable hardness tester. The Leeb tester is still the cheapest of the three, while the UCI price is between the other two testers.
Furthermore, choosing the most suitable method for your hardness test will depend mainly on your budget. However, if you have enough funds, the best choice will still be the tester with a combined UCI and Leeb method.
Nonetheless, a small budget will mean that you will have to give some benefits as you are left with either a Leeb or UCI hardness tester, in which case you will also have to consider the size and shape of the sample.
- How to choose a suitable portable hardness tester?
One important thing that affects the use of a portable hardness tester is its model.

The functions and buttons are very different for different portable hardness testers, and some parts might pose a challenge when used. The operation can therefore be difficult for some models of the portable hardness tester.
